Abstract

1,208,718. Micaceous laminates. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 7 March, 1969, No. 12141/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Division H1] A method of producing a strong, flexible, permeable micaceous insulation from a sheet or ribbon of micaceous material and a fibrous reinforcing substrate or backing comprises the steps of disposing a heat-shrinkable thermoplastic film 11, Fig. 1, between said micaceous sheet 10 and substrate 12 to form a composite and heating the composite to form voids 13 in the thermoplastic film whose thickness lies between 0À12 to 0À85 mils. The thermoplastic film may be polyester, polystyrene, polycarbonate, regenerated cellulose, ionomeric, α-olefinacid copolymer resins, polyamide, polyethylene, polypropylene, polymeric fluorinated ethylene, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, phenoxy resin or polysulphone, while the substrate may be cellulose, asbestos, glass, polyacrylate or polyester fibres, e.g. as paper, fibrous web or woven cloth. If a polyester film is used, then a backing with a higher melting point, such as an open weave glass cloth, must be used, while with a lower melting point film, a polyester fibre can be used. The composite insulation comprising mica paper from reel 21, Fig. 2, thermoplastic sheet from reel 20 and fibrous backing from reel 19 is passed over a heated roller 26 driven by a motor 28 after mica alone or with the thermoplastic sheath has been pre-heated at 25. A vent hood 29 is used. The insulation can be used for insulation of coils, conductors and electrical machine windings.
