Abstract
1,208,091. Vapour depositing glass cotinags. CARL - ZEISS - STIFTUNG, [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN.]. 21 Jan., 1969 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 3418/69. Heading C1M. [Also in Division C7] A multi-component glass containing a 1 to 10% by weight of alkali metal oxide is either degassed under vacuum or fused under a protective gas prior to vacuum deposition on a substrate by means of electron beam heating. The glass apart from the alkali metal oxide contains one or more oxides of elements from the second, third, fourth and fifth main groups of Mendeleev's Periodic Table or one or more oxides of elements from the first to eighth secondary groups or mixtures of any of these oxides, e.g. oxides of Ba, Ti, V, Nb, Ta, B, Al, Ga, Ge and P. With an alkali borosilicate glass the boric oxide content does not exceed 25%. Several glasses may be vapour deposited simultaneously or alternately and the glass should be preheated to above its strain point prior to vaporization. The substrates may be glass, mirrors, plastics and metals and they should be above ambient temperature during the coating process. The glass is first degassed by fusion under vacuum or a gas such as dry air, N 2 or a noble gas. The glass source is placed in a rotatable holder 1 in vacuum chamber 10 which also contains furnace 6 movable on. arm 7 by handle 8, electron gun 5 and substrates 9. The glass is preheated by furnace 6 which is then removed and the source is evaporated by electrons from gun 5. The glasses used have the following composition range. SiO 2 .. 35-85% B 2 O 3 .. 5-25% Li 2 O .. 0-5% Na 2 O .. 0À5-10% K 2 O .. 0À5-10% Al 2 O 3 .. 3-40% CaO .. 0-25% BaO .. 0-25% TiO 2 .. 0-20% V 2 O 5 .. 0-50% with a maximum of 10% alkali metal oxide.
