Abstract
1,207,759. Methanol synthesis gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 19 Dec., 1968 [15 Jan., 1968], No. 60480/68. Heading C5E. Methanol synthesis gas in which the molar proportion (H 2 -CO 2 ) to (CO + CO 2 ) is at least 2À05 to 1, is made in a two-stage catalytic process from a sulphur-free hydrocarbon feed having an average of 2 to 20 carbon atoms in the molecule. The feed is evaporated at between 2 to 20 atmospheres pressure and steam reformed over a Ni-rich catalyst at between 250‹ and 500‹ C. to produce a CH 4 -rich gas containing CO 2 . This gas is cracked at the same pressure in an indirectly heated tube furnace at at least 820‹ C. over a Ni catalyst. The ratio of steam to hydrocarbon in the first stage is in the range 2:1 to 3:1 by weight, and the catalyst in this stage should contain at least 30 wt. per cent Ni, preferably up to 60 wt. per cent, and have a surface area exceeding 80 sq. m. per gram. Feeds may be desulphurized by catalytic hydrogenation by recycling the synthesis gas or decompression gas from the methanol synthesis stage. Feeds mentioned include petrol, light fuel, diesel oil and propane/butane mixtures.
