Abstract

1,207,725. Halogenated cyano nitro-benzenes. C. A. CLARK (Philips Gloeilampenfabriken N.V.). 29 Feb., 1968, No. 9879/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division A5] The invention relates to halogenated cyano nitro-benzenes of the general formula in which Hlg is a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom or a bromine atom, and n has the value 1, 2 or 3. Compounds claimed per se are 2,6 - dichloro - 1,3 - dicyano - 5 - nitrobenzene, 2,4,6 - trichloro - 1,3 - dicyano - 5 - nitrobenzene, 1,3 - dicyano - 4,6 - dichloro - 5 - nitrobenzene, 1,3 - dicyano - 2 - nitro - 5 - chlorobenzene and 1,3 - dicyano - 2,4,5 - trifluoro - 6 - nitro - benzene. The compounds may be prepared by; (1) converting the corresponding dicarboxylic acid with an acid chloride to form the corresponding dicarboxylic acid chloride which is reacted with ammonia to give the corresponding dicarboxylic acid amide which is converted by dehydration with strong dehydrating agents, for example, phosphoroxychloride or phosphorpentachloride to the corresponding dicarboxylic acid nitriles. Alternatively, the dicarboxylic acid is converted in one step with toluene sulphonamide and phosphorpentachloride into the dicarbonitrile. (2) By oxidizing the corresponding amino compounds (prepared by chlorinating the aminodicyanobenzene) e.g. with peracetic acid, perbenzoic acid and potassium- or ammoniumpersulphate; (3) by diazotizing a compound of the formula after which the resulting diazonium compound is converted into cyanide with a cuprous compound according to the Sandmeyer method, which is preferably carried out with cuprous cyanide in the presence of potassium cyanide. (4) By diazotizing a compound of the formula in which m = 0, 1 or 2, p= 1 or 2 and m+p=n, after which the diazonium compound is converted with hydrogen halogenide into the required compound of Formula I. (5) By nitrating with concentrated sulphuric and nitric acid or alkali salt thereof the dicyano halogenated benzene to introduce one nitro-group, the nitrile groups being converted into corresponding COOH groups which may be converted back into nitrile groups by the method in (1) above.
