Abstract
1,207,453. Irradiating liquids and apparatus for such irradiation. SULZER BROS. Ltd. 27 Feb., 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 9422/68. Heading H5R. In the irradiation of continuously flowing liquid by passing it through a duct which runs near a radioactive source, plugs which occupy substantially the whole of the cross-sectional area of the duct and yet will pass along it are introduced periodically into the duct before the radiation zone and are then removed from the duct after they have left the radiation zone, said plugs thus effectively dividing the flow of liquid into discrete portions. Suitable apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 where a cylindrical source 1 is surrounded by a double-tiered helically arranged conduit or duct 2 through which liquid from inlet 5, pump 4 and conduit 3 flows to leave by conduit 12 and exit pipe 15. Immediatley before the coil 2, a shaft 6 is connected to conduit 3 which shaft contains the plugs, e.g. metal balls 9, which have a diameter substantially the same as that of the liquid conduit particularly that conduit in region of the source, which are delivered into the liquid conduit by the reciprocation of a push-rod 7 operating on a cam 8. It is preferred that cam 8 be driven via a transmission by the same motor which drives the pump 4. A catch 11 operated by spring 10 prevents the plugs stored in shaft 6 from following the push-rod through the whole of its descent. A preferred feature is that the plugs 9 are separated from the liquid flow and recycled to shaft 6. This is achieved by having a branch 14 leading off the liquid conduit along which the plugs automatically proceed, the liquid being diverted by a branch 15. The reciprocation of push rod 7 is sufficient to permit the return of the plugs into shaft 6. The recycling of liquid between the outlet and inlet via shaft 6 is kept to a minimum by choosing the clearance in shaft 6. An alternative plug (Fig. 2, not shown) is a dumb-bell shaped element having resilient sealing pieces inserted in the ends to give the desired fit in the liquid conduit.
