Abstract

1,206,946. Extrusion moulding plastics sheets or sections. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 6 Oct., 1967 [11 Oct., 1966; 31 Jan., 1967], Nos. 45401/66 and 4588/67. Heading B5A. A continuous extrusion process for producing fibre-reinforced plastics sheets or sections comprises drawing thermosetting resin impregnated mats, cloths or filaments of reinforcing material, e.g. glass fibre or sisal, through a shaping die and injecting thermoplastics or thermosetting liquid plastics into contact with the reinforcing material via recesses 30 which are situated in a cooled part 27 of die 34 to form coating layers 33. As shown, the impregnating liquid thermosetting resin is injected into contact with reinforcing material 10 via recesses 18 which are situated in a cooled upstream portion 15 of the die. Further portions 26, 28 of the die are heated and downstream portion 29 is cooled. The coating plastics may be of the same composition as the impregnant, in which case only one of reservoirs 19, 31 need be used. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), a coating of liquid thermosetting resin is applied to the reinforcing material by passage thereof through a tank (22) upstream of die (23). Laminated material may be produced by introducing into the die a core material sandwiched between two layers of glass-fibre mat or cloth. The coating plastics may be, as a thermosetting resin, a polyester, or as a thermoplastic resin PVC. The layers 33 need not be applied to all faces of the impregnated reinforcement.
