Abstract

1,206,423. Polymerizing dodecanolactam. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 April, 1968 [10 May, 1967], No. 18671/68. Divided out of 1,206,422. Heading C3R. Dodecanolactam is polymerized by heating it in the presence of an acid which is capable of catalysing the polymerization and of an N- substituted amide, non-polymerizable per se, which may be of the formula R 1 CONHR 2 , wherein R 1 and R 2 each represent alkyl, cycloalkyl, or aryl radicals, and may be the same or different. Specific amides mentioned are acetanilide, benzanilide, N-butylbenzamide, N- acetylbutylamine and benzoylpiperidine and acid catalysts which may be used include organic phosphonic acids e.g. cyclohexylphosphonic acid, organic sulphonic acid, eg. p - toluene sulphonic and ethyl sulphonic acids, and phosphoric and hydrochloric acids.
