Abstract

1,206,388. Collapsible steering columns. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [4 July, 1968], No. 25927/69. Heading B7H. A vehicle steering column comprises a teleecopically collapsible steering shaft concentrically mounted within an outer tube which is securable to a vehicle firewall 7 and instrument panel 4, absorbs energy when contracted and comprises two parts 11, 12 of different diameter and each having a conical portion, the portions partly overlapping one within the other to define a conical interspace 27 of uniform width in which are disposed a number of elastic, deformable rings 14. On assembly an elastomeric ring 15 engages a groove 24 and a circlip 16 to prestress the rings 14 radially and the outer tube portions axially. The top of the upper tube 12 is supported in a bracket 2 through a number of vibration absorbing rubber rings 19 and a sleeve 20. Upward movement of the tube part relative to the bracket is prevented by a shoulder 25 of the tube part and an internal flange 26 of the sleeve 20.
