In order to provide an indication of the charging of a battery 19 by a generator 11 of a vehicle, an indicating device, such as a lamp 29, is connected in series with a positive temperature coefficient resistor 27 across the battery the resistor being connected to the generator and to the battery by decoupling elements. Closure of an ignition switch 22 connects the lamp 29 and resistor 27 so that current flows therethrough from the battery 19 by way of a diode 28 forming a decoupling element. This current is insufficient to heat the resistor 27 to any appreciable extent and the lamp 29 is brightly illuminated. When the engine of the vehicle is started and the alternator 11 produces an output to charge the battery 19 a heavy current flows through the resistor 27 from the alternator 11 by way of a diode 25 forming a further decoupling element. The concomitant increase in temperature of the resistor then raises its resistance such that the current through the lamp 29 is insufficient to maintain the illumination thereof. In a second embodiment a normal resistor and a capacitor are each connected in parallel with the resistor 27 to enhance the operation of the lamp 29.
