1,204,917. Photo-sensitive materials. ALGRAPHY Ltd. Nov.1, 1968 [Nov.14, 1967; May 15, 1968], Nos.51680/67 and 23037/68. Heading G2C. A photo-sensitive material comprises a support carrying a photo-sensitive layer and in that layer or in a sub or in overcoated layer a stabilized vat dye such as an indigosol dye which undergoes a colour change on exposure to light. Specified photosensitive layers are bicromated colloids, quinone diazides in novolak binders, nitroaldehydes, nitronaphthalene sulphonic acids and cinnamate esters of polyvinyl alcohol, starch, cellulose and epoxyresins. If the dye is in a layer other than the photo-sensitive layer it may be in a binder such as polyvinyl acetate, shellac or cellulose acetate phthalate. The material may be imagewise exposed to produce a dye image in the exposed areas and the unexposed areas removed to leave a printing plate. If a quinone diazide is used, the exposed areas are removed on alkaline development. A sensitizer such as a ketone, a nitro compound, an anthraquinone, an anthrone or a thiazoline may be added to the photo-polymerisable layer. An additional dye or pigment may be added to the vat dye layer to improve the contrast of the image with respect to its background.
