Abstract
1,204,315. Photo-electric line follower. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Sept.12, 1967 [Sept.26, 1966], No.42819/66. Heading G1A. A photo-electric line, or boundary, follower is moved along a line by a co-ordinate drive system in response to signals emitted by two photo-cells positioned one after the other to view different portions of the line and each traversely scanning the line repeatedly. For following a line the photocells are mounted in a rotatable head with one photo-cell positioned upon the centre of rotation and the other ahead of it and known as the steering photo-cell. If the transverse scans become misaligned with the line the steering photo-cell generates a signal out of phase with a reference signal which rotates the head to turn the scan relative to the line and also to rotate the rotar of a synchorous resolver. One winding of the rotor is fed with the signal from the other photo-cell and a second winding with reference A.C. Control voltages are taken from 90 degrees phased stator windings to X and X motors of the co-ordinate drive system, whereupon the head is driven back in the direction of the line and on reaching it realigns itself. If a boundary between light and dark regions is being followed a pair of photo-cells replace each of the previous ones each pair being arranged side by side and their outputs fed to a differential amplifier. To scan the line each photo-cell or each pair may be mounted upon an oscillating rod as described in Specification 1,104, 578 or an image of the line may be scanned optically across the photocells.
