Abstract

1,204,273. Cooling blast furnaces. DUISBURGER KUPFERHUETTE and DEUTSCHE BABCOCK & WILCOX-DAMPFKESSEL-WERKE A.G. 22 Jan., 1968 [18 March, 1967], No. 3282/68. Heading F4B. A blast furnace (not shown) is cooled by means of evaporative cooling boxes e.g. 1-9 embedded in its brickwork. The furnace is divided into superposed sections A-D, to respective steam and water drums of which 10-13, softened and filtered feed water is supplied through lines 29-32 respectively under the control of valves 33-36 respectively. Flow meters 37-40 respectively indicate the flow in each of the lines so allowing any section with a leaking cooling box to be identified. The series connected boxes e.g. 1-4 of each section together with the downcomers e.g. 14, 15, the steam and water drum e.g. 10 and the lower water distributer header e.g. 22 of that section form a closed natural or forced circulatory cooling system for that furnace section. Steam generated is released to atmosphere from the steam and water drums, or passed to a condenser (not shown). The lowermost furnace sections, which are the hottest have less cooling boxes connected in series than the cooler upper furnace sections. Steam in line 42 from drum 10 of the hottest furnace section A may be used to heat water in header 25 of the coolest furnace section D, condensate thereby produced being separated in separator 43 and recycled by line 44 back to the drum 10.
