Abstract

Apparatus for grinding in a fluidized bed particulate material (e.g. magnesium dioxide for use as an electrical insulator comprises means 3 to supply a compressed air jet and means 1, 2 to supply particles to a chamber 4 which has a nozzle 5 in one wall, and outside the chamber a container 7 with an open end aligned with and directed towards the nozzle 5. In operation, granular particles are entrained in the compressed air jet pass through the nozzle and contact each other so as to be ground in the fluidised bed in the container 7. Air escapes via a vent 8 and ground material through an opening 10 in a hopper 9. Air is prevented from discharge at 10 by the large amount of powder in the hopper 9. The powder is discharged by way of e.g. a proportioning roller, a turntable or a vibratory conveying trough.
