Abstract

1,203,783. Chairs. G. K. N. SANKEY Ltd. 30 May, 1968 [3 May, 1967], No. 20519/67. Heading A4U. A back-rest frame of a chair is hinged at 34 to the seat 18 and is urged forwardly by a spring unit which is hinged to the seat at 46 and engages in one of three notches 48, 50, 52 in an arcuate pressure plate 36 welded to the back, each notch affording a different spring reaction. The spring unit comprises two springs (62, 63) of different hand surrounding a square sectioned shank 42 which is pivoted at 46 to the seat and passes through a slot (43) in the pressure plate 36. The lower ends of the springs abut a plate (64) which is retained on the shank 42 by a nut (67), and the upper ends of the springs abut the upper part (58) of a two part housing (56) enclosing the springs and press a nose 60 on the housing part (58) into the selected notch 48, 50, 52. The plate 64 has lugs (68) disposed in bayonet slots (69) in the rotatable lower part (57) of the housing. The lower part (57) is rotated to cause the lugs to slide along inclined portions of the slots (69) to facilitate pivoting of the spring unit. The pivoting of the back rest frame is limited by an arm 38 on the pressure plate abutting the seat 18 and in the other direction by the ends of the back rest frame also abutting the seat 18. The height of the seat can be adjusted by screwing a nut 17(a), loosely mounted on the top of a sleeve 14, on to a post (16) supporting the seat. The nut is held captive on the sleeve by a screw (17c).
