Abstract

[Also in Division A5] Novel 8-triazine derivatives of the general formula wherein X is a N 3 , C 1-6 alkoxy or C 1-6 alkylthio group or a halogen atom, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are each a hydrogen atom or a C 1-6 alkyl or C 2-6 alkenyl group optionally substituted by OH, OR, SR or CN, in which R is a C 1-6 alkyl group, n and m are each an integer from 1 to 4 and either n or m may be zero, and R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each a C 1-4 alkyl group or either R<SP>3</SP> or R<SP>4</SP> may be a hydrogen atom are prepared by reaction of 1 mol of cyanuric halide with 1 mol of ammonia or an amine of the general formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>NH and 1 mol of a cyanoalkylamine of the general formula H 2 N(CH 2 )N-CR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP>-(CH 2 )m-N in the presence of an acid-binding agent, followed optionally by reaction of the 2-amino-4-cyanoalkylamino-6-halo-8-triazine of the first general formula above so produced with a sodium alkylmercaptide or alcoholate. They are useful as herbicides. 1 - Methyl - 2 - aminopropionitrile, 3`- aminobutyronitrile and 2 - amino - 2,2 - dimethylpropionitrile are prepared by reaction of ammonia with methacrylonitrile, allyl cyanide and 2,2-dimethyl-acrylonitrile, respectively.
