Abstract

1,203,283. Polyamide compositions. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 May, 1968 [26 June, 1967], No. 29430/67. Heading C3R. A polyamide composition of decreased deformability comprises more than 90% of a synthetic polyamide and a phenol characterized by (a) being a definite chemical compound rather than a mixture of oligomers, (b) having no benzene rings with more than one hydroxyl group attached, (c) having a substituent ortho to each phenolic hydroxyl group when the molecule contains less than four benzene rings the substituent being methyl, secondary alkyl, tertiary alkyl (including cycloalkyl) or aralkyl, (d) having two substituents orthoto the phenolic hydroxyl group when the molecule contains only one benzene ring and (e) being soluble in a polyamide. The polyamide may be a random or block copolymer or a polymer mixture. Polymers specified are nylon 6, nylon 11 and nylon 66. Phenols specified are 2,4-dimethyl - 6 - tert. - butylphenol, bis(2 - hydroxy - 3 - tert. - butyl - 5 - methylphenyl)methane, 2,2 - bis(3 - methyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane, 2,2 - bis(3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane, 2,2 - bis(3,5 - diisopropyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) propane, 1,1,3 - tris(3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)butane, 1,1,3 - tris(2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 2 - tert. - butyl - phenyl)butane, 1,1,5,5 - tetrakis(2 - methyl - 4 - hydroxy - 5 - tert. - butylphenyl) pentane, 2,2,5, 5 - tetrakis(3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) hexane, 1,4 - bis - [di(2 - methyl - 4- hydroxy - 5 - tert. - butylphenyl)methyl]benzene, and diamides of m-phenylene diamine, p-phenylene diamine, bis(4 - amino -cyclohexyl)methane and bis(4 - amino - phenyl)methane with 3 - hydroxy - 4 - methylbenzoic acid, 3,3 - bis (4 - hydroxyphenyl (valeric, acid and 3,3 - bis(3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) valeric acid. The phenol may be added to the polymer before it is made into moulding granules, to the moulding granules or to the polymer melt immediately before extrusion. A granular concentrate may be made and added to unmodified polyamide moulding granules. The ratio of phenol to polyamide may be such that 2 to 20 phenolic hydroxyl groups are present in the mixture per 100 amide units. The composition may be extruded into filaments, bristles, fibres or films which may be drawn.
