Abstract
1,202,208. Making vacuum vessels; jointing; jointing by forging; drawing. SPEMBLY TECHNICAL PRODUCTS Ltd. 1 Nov., 1967 [11 Nov., 1966; 23 Oct., 1967], Nos. 50742/66 and 48134/67. Headings B3A, B3H, B3P and B3V. [Also in Division F2] A joint between a stainless steel pipe 1 and the neck 4 of an aluminium vessel 2 is made by forcing a collar 6 down over the neck to force the neck to flow into serrations 3 on the tube. The collar is held on the neck by a flange 4D formed by an annular punch 7A during the jointing. The neck 4 is welded to the vessel after the jointing. The neck can be tapered to tightly fit the collar or a wedge section collar can be forced between a secondary collar (9), Fig. 2 (not shown), and the neck. The secondary collar may be externally threaded and the collar (8), Fig. 2A (not shown), forced down by a ring nut (10). Alternatively the neck can be jointed to the pipe by an annular collar (11), Fig. 3 (not shown). In one embodiment, Figs. 4 and 4A (not shown), the neck is deformed by an impact, e.g. explosion, from a dolly (14). The impact causes the outer collar (13) to bulge outwards. In an alternative embodiment the pipe has a pointed end 60B which engages a shoulder on the neck. The neck has a duct 61B so that the trapped air between the neck and pipe can be relieved. The neck 61 is deformed by a punch 62 so that it engages a flange 60A on the pipe. A steel clip (63) Fig. 7 (not shown), or a pair of semicircular keepers bolted together may be secured around the joint to additionally tension it. In a further embodiment the pipe and the neck are overlapped, Fig. 8 (not shown), and the assembly pushed through a drawing die (82) which engages a flange (81A) on the neck and stretches the neck on to the pipe. The pipe has serrations on its end face (80A) as well as on its curved surface (80B). The flange (81A) on the neck is deformed inwards to engage a shoulder on the pipe and to hold the joint in tension. In a further embodiment, Fig. 9, the assembly is drawn through a die 92 which is smaller than the diameter of the neck. The end face of the pipe has an annular recess 90A and the curved surface has serrations 90C into which the neck is drawn. The joints are used between the stainless steel pipe (1), Fig. 5 (not shown), and the neck of a Dewar vessel. The neck is jointed to the tube and then welded to the other vessels which are also aluminium.
