1,202,172. Sawing. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 20 Feb., 1969 [22 March, 1968], No. 9263/69. Heading B5L. A band saw cutting machine for cutting bars 5 of, for example, nuclear or pyrophoric material, comprises a first box 12 for removing fumes caused by cutting of the bars and a second box 13 partly filled with water for removing sparks or particles of metal produced during the cutting operation. The bar 5 to be cut is held by collars 6, 7 on a carriage (not shown) which is reciprocatable along grooves 8 in a table 9 so as to present the bar to the saw 1. The first box 12 consists of a body 14 which is mounted above the table 9 and has a transparent removable cover 15 for permitting access to the bar. The blade is guided by a pair of rollers 17, 18 disposed within the box. During cutting the fumes produced are extracted from the box by a conduit 20 connected to a pump 19. The second box 13 is disposed below the table and formed as two compartments which communicate with one another and are defined by a flanged section 23. A transparent cover 22 closes the front of the box which is filled to a mean level with water. The blade is guided in the second box by rollers 31, 32 beneath which are adjustable deflectors 33, 34 for directing the sparks and particles produced during cutting into the water in the compartments. The water is circulated by a pump 27 and the particles settle in a container 28 associated with one of the compartments. The pump 19 is connected by a suction hose 40 to a pair of intakes 37, 38 for removing fumes from the box. The saw blade is also guided by a drawer seal 41 which can be removed from between the flanges 23 by a handle 42 and contains asbestos 44 through which the blade slides. A collecting vessel 45 is disposed beneath the box 13 and consists of a pair of concentric casings provided with slits which, when aligned, permit removal of the saw blades, and when out of alignment close the vessel so that it may be filled with granular or powdered graphite for any final sparks carried by the saw teeth.
