Abstract
1,201,937. Electroplating plastics; electroless deposition. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A. G. Sept.28, 1967 [Oct.14, 1966], No.44196/67. Headings C7B and C7F. An adherent metal coating is produced on a styrene - containing polymeric thermoplast containing 0À1 - 50% by weight of finely divided inorganic material, e.g. TiO2 (rutile or anatase) Cu or ZnO, having a particle size of 0À1 - 2 microns in homogeneous distribution, by treating it with a pickling agent, e.g. H2 504 with or without CrO3 and H3PO4; applying thereto an electrically conductive layer, e.g. of Cu by first activating with acid Sn Cl2 and ammoniacal Ag NO3 solutions then treating with a solution of CuSO4, CH2O, Na tartrate, citric acid and other complex formers; and electro-depositing a metal coating e. g. of Cu on to this layer. The thermoplast may be polystyrene, or a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile and/or butadiene e.g. ABS - graft copolymers, or of styrene, acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid; a graft co-polymer of styrene and/or alpha-methyl styrene and acrylonitrile on to polybutadiene may be used.
