Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A raceway for a ball bearing is formed by bending into a ring a wire of non-circular cross section provided with at least one ball-track. The wire has one ball-track 2, Fig. 1; two balltracks 62, Fig. 3; or four ball-tracks 8, Fig. 2. An assembled ball bearing, Fig. 4, has outer and inner metal shells 12 and 14 and balls 15, with or without a cage or separators. The outer shell 12 may be provided with an end-plate 16 and the separators may be balls of smaller size or of synthetic plastics material, for example. As depicted in Fig. 7 (not shown), a bearing is retained by circlips 24 and 25 and in a modification, Fig. 9, circlips 27, 28 are provided with tapers 29, 30 which co-operate with taper surfaces of a shaft and of a housing so as to effect pre-loading of the bearing. The wire may be bent into a helix with, continuous torsional pre-loading to prevent twist.
