Abstract

1,200,342. Compressing fibrous materials. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 May, 1968 [2 June, 1967], No. 25502/67. Heading B5A. Reinforced synthetic thermoplastic articles are formed by compressing a mixture of two fibrous materials at a temperature between the melting points of the materials, at least the lower melting of the two materials being a synthetic thermoplastic which flows to form a matrix completely surrounding the fibres of the other material. Both materials may be synthetic thermoplastics and the higher melting material may be coated to improve adhesion to the lower melting material and may comprise 2¢ to 75 volume per cent of the fibre mixture. The lower melting polymer may be polypropylene, polyethylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), nylons, polymers or copolymers of polyvinyl-chloride or polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile, and the other fibrous material may be one of the above polymers or glass, asbestos, metal or carbon. The article may be formed in a heated press or between rollers heated to the required temperature. The examples relate to the formation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) fibre reinforced polypropylene, asbestos fibre reinforced nylon, carbon fibre reinforced poly- (ethylene terephthalate) and glass fibre reinforced nylon.
