Abstract

1,199,736. Welding by fusion. KOBE STEEL Ltd. 3 Aug., 1967 [3 Aug., 1966], No. 35723/67. Heading B3R. A tubular electrode wire for gas-shielded, automatic or semi-automatic arc welding consists of a thick-walled iron or steel tube surrounding a firmly compacted core of powdery material including an arc stabilizing and deoxidizing agent or agents, said core having a cross-sectional area of 5-25% of the total cross-sectional area of the wire. The arc stabilizing agent may consist of one or more of graphite, Ti, Al, Mg, Ca and rare earth elements, and alloys between any of these and of these with Fe. The deoxidizing agent may consist of one or more of Mn, Si, Ti and Al, and alloys between any of these and of these with Fe. The powdery material may include additional powder of any of the above elements to suit workpiece composition and of Fe to raise fusing efficiency. The arc stabilizing agent and the deoxidizing agent are respectivey 2-10% and 20-90% of the total weight of the powdery material. The arc stabilizing agent is normally 20% or less of the total weight of both agents. In wire examples having a diameter of 1.6 mm., the tube is of mild steel and the powdery material compositions include : C0 2 is referred to as a shielding gas. The wire may be made by (a) bending thin metallic strip 2, placing the powdery material in the fold, and bending the strip further to form a circular cross-section raw cored wire, as shown; (b) baking the raw cored wire at 180- 350‹ C. to remove dirt and fatty material from the tube and moisture from the powdery material; and, finally (c) drawing the raw cored wire through dies, preferably at least three times, to increase the density of the powdery material, suitably size the wire, and thin out and smooth the thin oxide film produced in the baking. The longitudinal tube seam (3) may be sealed by welding (Fig. 2, not shown) to permit surface treatment such as plating. The tube may comprise outer and inner nested metal sleeves (Fig. 3, not shown). The Specification includes details of tests in respect of improved welding speeds and quality, electrical conductivity, and wire corrosion resistance.
