Abstract

1,199,674. Dental handpieces. KALTENEACH & VOIGT. 10 July, 1968 [13 July, 1967], No. 32973/68. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F1] A dental handpiece comprises an air turbine having a rotor 12 fixed to a shaft 11, and a bearing 9 supporting one end of the shaft, said bearing being provided with frusto-conical bearing surfaces 5, 6 formed on inner and outer ring members 15, 16 respectively. The bearing surfaces are lubricated by compressed air supplied through radial bores and' axial movement of the inner ring 15 caused by the air pressure is resisted by a spring 32. The spring is located between an abutment 15b on the ring 15 and one end of an axially adjustable clamping ring 30. The size of the bearing air gap may be altered by adjusting the ring 30 which is provided with a convex exterior surface in vertical cross-section. Air is supplied to the rotor via a conduit 27a and lubricating air is supplied through a passage 25, the ring 15 being entrained as the shaft 11 rotates. A similar bearing 10 supports the shaft on the other side of the rotor. A dental tool 13 is mounted in a bore in the shaft 11.
