Abstract
1,199,370. Lubricating. TECUMSEH PRODUCTS CO. 6 June, 1968 [12 July, 1967], No. 26894/68. Heading F2A. [Also in Division F1] A rotatable body, such as a shaft 22 of a motor-compressor unit, has an axial bore 28 through which lubricant is forced, the axial bore having a first discharge port 62 through which lubricant is centrifuged and directed within a predetermined angular range when the body rotates at a first speed, and the axial bore having a second discharge port 60 through which lubricant is also centrifuged when the body rotates at a second speed. The combined discharges of lubricant when the body rotates at the second speed are together directed within the same predetermined angular range as the predetermined angular range through which lubricant from the first discharge port is directed, that is when the body rotates at a first speed. A compressor 20, Fig. 1, and a motor 18 are mounted within a sealed shell 16. The compressor shaft 22 is mounted in bearings 23, 24, has an extension 25 which serves as a shaft for the motor 18, and has a pump 26 mounted at its lower end. The shaft 22 has a concentric bore 28, Fig. 2; an eccentric bore 32, a port 38 and a helical groove 40 for lubricating the bearing 23; a radial port 50, Fig. 3, for lubricating the bearing 24; and a port 46, Fig. 5, for lubricating a piston and cylinder 42, 44, Fig. 1. Excess lubricant, which does not pass through the ports 38, 46 and 50, passes through the bore 32 and through a port 62, Fig. 3, when the shaft is rotating at a first speed or passes through both the port 62 and a port 60, Fig. 2, when the shaft is rotating at a second speed. The arrangement and construction of the ports 60 and 62 ensures that the excess lubricant leaves the shaft 22 in a predetermined direction so that substantially all the excess lubricant contacts the shell 16 and is thereby cooled.
