Abstract
1,199,190. Non-woven fabrics. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 14 Nov., 1967 [14 Nov., 1966 (2); 15 Aug., 1967 (2); 6 Oct., 1967], No. 51799/67. Heading D1R. An absorbent, non-woven, unbonded fabric comprises at least 10% water-sensitive fibres (i.e. those fibres with a wet coefficient of friction of less than 0.9 as measured on a non-woven fabric consisting essentially of the salt free fibres being tested) and is characterised in that the water-sensitive fibres are less than 3 inches long, the balance of the fibres consisting of non-water-sensitive fibres being less than 0.5 inches long, the fabric having a dry coherence value, C h dry (the coherence value Ch is a measure of the degree to which the fibres within the fabric break as opposed to slipping apart when a strip of the fabric is pulled apart; the test for the evaluation of Ch is described in the specification) of at least 0.2 and a wet coherence value, C h wet, of less than 0.3 with the proviso that the ratio Ch dry greater than or equal to 1.3 Ch wet A process for preparing the above product comprises preparing water-sensitive fibres, preparing a non-woven web comprising at least 10% of water-sensitive or potentially watersensitive fibres of less than 3 inches in length, the remainder of the fibres being non-watersensitive and less than 0.5 inches in length, supporting the web on an apertured member and impinging said web with fine columnar streams of a liquid inert to the fibres at an energy flux of at least 23,000 ft-poundals/inssec., and traversing the web with the streams. When the water-sensitive fibres are prepared first, the stream is comprised of a deswelling liquid for the fibres. The water-sensitive fibres are preferably treated cellulosic fibres. Webs of varying concentrations of water-sensitive fibres may be layered prior to treatment with the liquid streams. The fabric produced may be perforated or embossed, depending on the pattern of the supporting surface. The fabric is most suitable as disposible sanitary wear.
