[Also in Division H1] An adapter 1 for insertion between the plug of a mains-voltage appliance and a mains socket outlet contains a relay for controlling the current flow to the appliance and has a plug 7 fitting into the mains socket and a socket 2 receiving the appliance plug. Energizing current to the relay, fed via sockets 13, 14, is supplied from a low-voltage source, e.g. a torch battery. A switch 16 provides overriding control of the appliance (see Division H1). A window (27) is provided in the adapter housing below the socket 2 to allow inspection of the relay contacts so that minimum sparking on change over can be obtained by adjustment of an external phase-control device or a capacitor may be provided across the switch and relay contacts for spark-suppression.
