Abstract
1,198,673. Conducting-liquid switches. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 13 Sept., 1967 [3 Jan., 1967], No. 41792/67. Heading H1N [Also in Division F1] In a method of electrically isolating a fluid feed line containing an electrically conductive fluid, bubbles 15 of a non-conducting fluid are successively injected into the line. The arrangement is applied in a mercury feed manifold 2 for the cathodes of individual thrusters in an ion engine system of a spacecraft (see Division F1). The mercury 4 moving along the insulating manifold 2 has bubbles 15 of gas injected at inlet 14 from electromagnetically driven bellows 16, 30. The bubbles are removed through a porous wall 18 in an evacuated chamber 20. The presence of a bubble 15 as it approaches the porous wall 18 is detected by a coaxial capacitor 24 and the signal used to operate a pulser 26 controlling the injection of the next bubble so that there is always at least one bubble in the pipeline 2.
