Abstract

1,198,597. Luminescent screens. SIEMENS A.G. 10 March, 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 12578/69. Heading C4S. [Also in Division H1] In a screen, e.g. for an X-ray image intensifier, the support, on which is disposed a layer of a substance capable of fluorescing, is formed of a polyimide. Preferably the polyimide is a film of thickness less than 15Á and is formed as the product of a condensation reaction between a tetrabasic aromatic acid and an aromatic diamine. For example, the polyimide may be the product of the condensation of one or more of m-diaminobenzene, p-diaminobenzene, 4,41- diaminodiphenylpropane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl methane, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenylether, 1,5-diaminonaphthalene and 3,3<SP>1</SP>-dichlorobenzidine, with one or more of 2,3,6,7-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, 3,3<SP>1</SP>,4,4<SP>1</SP>-diphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, 2,6-dichloronaphthalene - 1,4,5,8 - tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, and pyrolidine 2,3,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. As shown, such screens may comprise a photocathode 3, image-forming electrodes 5, 6 and 9, and fluorescent screen 8. The photo-cathode consists of a polyimide support 10 less than 10Á thick, a fluorescent layer 11 of cadmium sulphide with a polysiloxane binder covered with a reflecting layer 12 of magnesium oxide on the side of the support 10 facing the input window 4, the other side of support 10 being covered with a photo-cathode layer 13 consisting of antimony. activated with caesium. The fluorescent screen 8 comprises polyimide support 16, fluorescent layer 17 of silver-activated zinc-cadmium sulphide with a silicon dioxide binder and an aluminium layer 18, and the screen may be maintained in good optical contact with the end wall 7 by an adhesive layer 19 consisting of a polyimide lacquer.
