Abstract

1,197,802. 3,5-Dimethyl phenol. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 28 Sept., 1967 [30 Sept., 1966], No. 44136/67. Heading C2C. 3,5-Dimethyl phenol is obtained by catalytically splitting off methane from isophorone in the gaseous phase, in the presence of a catalyst containing alumina, chromium III oxide and 15-40 mol. per cent of an alkali metal oxide based on the chromium III oxide. The preferred alkali metal oxide is potassium oxide and preferably the process is carried out at a temperature in the range 600-650‹ C.
