Abstract

1,197,345. Change-speed gear. VAUXHALL MOTORS Ltd. 27 Feb., 1969 [12 March, 1968], No. 11940/68 Heading F2D. In a motor-vehicle countershaft transmission, tne usual pilot bearing between the transmission input shaft 12 and the engine crank-shaft (not shown) is eliminated, the shaft 12 being cantilevered on three axially spaced bearings, two, 44, 46, between the hollow rear end of the input shaft 12 and the main output shaft 38, and a third, 20, retained in the transmission casing 18 by the usual sealed end-cover 22. Since the only direct contact with the engine crank-shaft is now through the non-metallic facings of the usual splined clutch disc 10, the transmission shafts are insulated from metallic contact with the crank-shaft.
