Abstract
1,196,689. Optical navigation. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 27 Feb., 1969 [25 April 1968], No. 19681/68. Addition to 1,123,950. 1,1g Heading H4D. [Also in Division G1] Two components of a vehicles velocity over a surface of variable reflectivity are respectively detected by pairs of photo detectors A, B and C, D, each component being determined by feeding the detectors outputs to a correlatorone via a variable delay-and thereby determining the time taken for an area of surface to pass from the field of view of one detector to the other. The vehicle is exemplified as a car and means are provided illuminating the areas under each detector, said areas being such (e.g. as shown in dotted lines for detectors A and B) that at least part of the ground illuminating under a first detection of a pair will pass to be illuminated under the second detection of said pair. The components may be orthogonal as shown and signals proportional thereto are fed to a rolling ball moving map display Fig. 4. One component signal causes rotation of motor 8 and, by means of shaft gear 6 engaging teeth 5 on the inside of ring 1, the rotation of ring 1 bearing against the ball bearing 18. The ring rotates on axle 2 journalled in bearings 4 in a ring 3. Ring 3 is rotated in accordance with the second component of velocity by means of motor 17 and shaft gear 15 engaging ring teeth 14. Ball 18 is thus caused to rotate in a direction such that a map 19, frictionally supported by said ball, moves in accordance with the vehicles velocity, a pair of cross wires 21/22 indicating the position of the vehicle. A pen may be provided at the cross wire intersection to produce a course record.
