Abstract

An acoustic data carrier or sound record is made by feeding a plain sheet or film of thermoplastic material to a heating zone wherein a region of the sheet or film surrounded by an unheated region is heated and then feeding the sheet or film having the heated region to a press device for the impression on this region of soundreproducing grooves. As shown in Fig. 1, a film web of synthetic thermoplastic material from which the records are to be manufactured is passed through a printing device 2 in those regions of the film which are ultimately to form the central or label zone of the record. From the device 2 the film web is passed to an assembly 3 comprising adjacent to one another on a common support a heater station 4 and a press station 5. In the heater station 4 the film web is heated over a localized area and subsequently moved by an amount such that the heated area is disposed beneath the press tool. In the press station 5 sound-reproducing grooves are impressed on the heated area and, if desired, the record circumference and the central hole may be punched out in the press station. Alternatively, the latter operations may be carried out in a succeeding device 6. As shown in Fig. 2, in the heater station 4, two heater elements 7 can be arranged one above and the other below the film web 1. Both heater elements 7 have an annular shape, as shown in the plan view depicted in Fig. 3 and are polished bright on the surfaces facing the film web. Each heater element 7 is fixedly mounted on a head portion 8 containing electrical resistance heating elements connected to a power cable 9. The two heads 8 can be moved in guides 10 by means such as the pneumatic cylinder 11, so that when the film web is stationary the heater elements 7 can be brought into contact with the upper and lower surfaces of the film web and can then be retracted, whereupon the film web is again advanced until the next portion of it to be heated is in position between the heater elements. In the plan view shown in Fig. 3 the film web 1 and the annular heated area 12 are indicated by means of chain and dot lines and the appearance of the region of the film after the impression of the sound-reproducing grooves is shown on the extreme right.
