A machine for cutting a helical groove in an internal surface of a bearing member comprises a resiliently mounted tool capable of movement rotationally and axially relative to the member and cam means arranged to be located within the member and adapted to displace the tool against the surface for the length and depth required for the groove. A threaded spindle 6 is supported in a screw threaded support 4 so that when the spindle is rotated through a gear 8 a tool holder 9 carried by the spindle is fed axially and rotationally towards a bearing member 3 held in clamping means 2. The tool holder 9 has resilient tongues 10 each supporting a cutting tool 11 and having inwardly directed shoulders 12. An elongated pin 14 with a cam portion 16 extends within the tool holder and spindle and is carried forward therewith by the engagement of shoulders 12 with the portion 16 until movement of the pin 14 is arrested by abutment against the end surface of the bearing member 3. Continued movement of the spindle and tool holder causes the tools to ride out over the cam portion 16 thereby cutting a helical groove of depth and length determined by the dimensions of the cam portion and of pitch determined by the screw thread 7. Reverse rotation of the spindle draws the pin out of the bearing member so that cutting is not effected on the return stroke. In a further embodiment grooves are cut in a conical surface of a bearing member the cam portion being correspondingly conically shaped. Turning.-In an alternative arrangement the toolholder is held stationary and axial and rotational movement are imparted to the bearing member.
