Abstract

1,194,176. Flexible carbon and graphite fibres. LONZA-WERKE G.m.b.H. 29 Jan., 1969 [30 Jan., 1968], No. 4826/69. Heading C1A. Flexible carbon fibres are produced by heating a fibrous carbonizable starting material to a temperature of up to 1200‹ C., at a uniform heating rate under a pressure of less than 50 mm. Hg, and an inert gas containing from 0À5 to 5% by volume of oxygen is passed over or through the material during the heat treatment without any change in pressure. Preferably the inert gas is nitrogen which contains 1À0-2À0% by volume of oxygen. The heating of the carbonizable fibres may be achieved by a preheated inert gas stream. The fibres may be heated by passing through an oven on an endless screen belt, the inlet end of the oven being at the initial ternperature and the outlet at the final heating temperature. The oxygen containing inert gas stream is preferably introduced beneath the fibre supporting run of the endless belt. The oven may be a tunnel the moving belt passing through the tunnel transversely of shafts leading into the tunnel through which the oxygen containing inert gas stream is direct to the underside of the fibre supporting run of the endless belt, the temperature of the gas-streams issuing from adjacent shafts being their lowest at the inlet to the tunnel and highest at the outlet of the tunnel. The inert gas stream may be removed from the tunnel, cooled to condense the volatile condensation products and then reused after the oxygen content has be raised to the required level. The uniform heating rate may be from 50‹ to 250‹ C. preferably 100‹ to 200‹ C. per hour. The carbonized product may be graphitized by heating at a temperature of from 1300-3000‹ C. in an inert gas atmosphere.
