Abstract
1,193,885. Coated discharge tubes. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. and TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 16 February, 1968, No. 7650/68. Heading B2K. [Also in Division H1] The outer surface of a quartz glass tube 1 of a discharge lamp (see Division H1) having an internal coating at least mainly consisting of alumina and/or titanium dioxide is heated to a temperature in the range of 1500 to 1650‹C. to form a transparent metal oxide film on the inner surface of the tube. The coating may be produced by ball milling 100 g. of alumina powder, 11. of butyl acetate and 11 g. of nitrocellulose to form a suspension solution which is coated on the inner surface of the tube to a thickness of 5 to 50Á, followed by drying. The tube is then clamped in supports 3a, 3b and heated by an oxyhydrogen flame 16. Pulleys 5 and 14 are driven through a stepless speed change gear 6 to rotate the tube and drive the burner member 10 along a rail 11. An assembly 13 connecting burner member 10 to a threaded rod 12 can be disconnected to enable the member 10 to be moved by a hand wheel 17. The spacing between the supports 3a and 3b can be varied by a hand wheel 4.
