Abstract
1,193,549. Saccharification of starch; agitating liquids. NIPPON SHIRYO KOGYO CO. Ltd. 25 May, 1967, No. 55322/68. Divided out of 1, 175, 900. Headings B1C and B1X. Apparatus for enzymatic saccharification of starch comprises, connected one after the other, heating chamber 2 for heating a continuous flow of starch slurry, flash evaporating chamber 4 having annular space 5 surrounding a downwardly open internal cylindrical chamber for evaporating vapour from starch paste, mixing vessel 8 having a hot water jacket and a horizontally mounted cylindrical cage type stirrer 13, continuous converter 10 with pipe lines for recycling part of the reaction mixture to mixing vessel 8, and batch converter 11, and a storage tank 9 connected through metering pump P2 to vessel 8, and hot water circulating means for controlling the temperature of all parts of the apparatus containing reaction mixture. Flash evaporating chamber 4 may have perforated disc 6 through which starch paste flows in strings into air-cooled tower 7. Heating chamber 2 which may be steam-jacketed may have a central stirrer shaft with blades and the shaft may be hollow for passage of steam. In the embodiment of Fig. 5, steam is injected into the chamber through nozzles 25 and is mixed in venturis 26 with starch slurry fed in at 29. The mixture is forced past stationary helical vanes 27 into tube 28. Steam is supplied through passage 40 to shaft 38 of the stirrer.
