Abstract
1,193,048. Bluing compositions. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 20 Sept., 1968 [21 Sept., 1967], No. 44836/68. Headings C4A and C5D. Granular bluing compositions comprise a water-soluble inorganic hydratable alkaline salt, 0À1-15% by weight of ultramarine blue, and 0À004-5% by weight of a cationic quaternary ammonium compound of formula wherein one R group is where n is 1-3, 1 to 3 R groups are C 10 to C 0 alkyl and the remaining R groups are C 1 to C 3 alkyl, and X is chloride, bromide, iodide, or C 1 to C 3 alkyl sulphate or alkyl phosphate. Alkaline inorganic salts may be Na, K, or Li tripolyphosphates, carbonates, pyrophosphates, phosphates, or tetraborates. The compositions are for offsetting the yellowing of laundered fabrics, e.g. cotton-muslin, which may be resintreated, or Dacron (Registered Trade Mark). The granules may be prepared in a pan agglomerator by spraying particles of the inorganic salt with an adhesive mixture of the quaternary ammonium compound, ultramarine blue, water and an adhesive agent, while the particles are rotated in the pan. Adhesive agents may be starches, water-soluble gums or glues, dextrin, or an alkali metal silicate, and may contain sodium metaborate, borax, and an antimicrobial agent. Alternatively, the granules may be prepared by spray-drying of an aqueous mixture of the inorganic salt, ultramarine blue and the ammonium compound, or by spraying an aqueous slurry of the latter two ingredients on to particles of the salt in a ribbon blender or falling down a drying tower. Detergent compositions comprise the bluing granules admixed with a conventional granular detergent composition, e.g. of sodium straight chain alkyl-benzene sulphonate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium silicate, sodium toluene sulphate and sodium sulphate. Bluing granules wherein the ammonium compound is either replaced by a non-ionic ethylene oxide-propylene oxide-propylene glycol condensate, or else is omitted, are exemplified for comparison.
