Abstract
1,193,040. Hydrogen sulphide. DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT. 16 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 59649/68. Heading C1A. Hydrogen sulphide is produced from its elements in a column reactor at elevated temperature and pressure, the hydrogen being introduced at the lower end of the reactor (pipe 3) and excess liquid sulphur at the upper end (pipe 4); the excess sulphur is continuously run off from the lower end of the reactor (pipe 6). The temperature of the sulphur entering the reactor is preferably between 115‹ and 160‹ C. Some of the excess sulphur may be run off through pipe 9 before the reaction zone and after heat exchange with the hydrogen sulphide formed and sulphur vapour. The excess sulphur run off may be cooled and recycled to the head of the reactor. Alternatively, only sufficient sulphur may be added to effect the reaction and heating of the hydrogen, and cooling of the product and sulphur vapour is effected by inclusion of a condenser fed with water at 130‹ C. If very high temperatures occur owing to inadequate turbulence in individual reaction zones, they may be lowered by the introduction of cooler liquid sulphur through pipes 10. The hydrogen sulphide obtained may be further purified by reacting any sulphur still present adiabatically at about 350‹ C. with hydrogen sulphide in the presence of conventional catalysts and optionally hydrogen.
