Abstract

Alcohols are prepared by reacting with a halogenhydrocarbon on a salt of a higher fatty acid, e.g. sodium stearate, and saponifying the resulting ester. For example, using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the reaction vessel 1 is half-filled with stearic acid, the equivalent of solid caustic soda is added, the mixture is heated by the oil-jacket 2 to 200-240‹ C. and a mixture of pentyl and hexyl chlorides is run in from vessel 8 by tube 5 Unchanged chlorides, and olefines produced as by-products, distil over to condenser 15 and receptacle 17. The vessel 1 is then cooled to 150‹ C., caustic soda is added, and the vessel again heated to saponify the esters. The resulting alcohols are distilled off in steam, and the process repeated until the stearate in the vessel 1 has become highly charged with salt, when the mixture is removed, acidified, warmed, and the stearic acid decanted off, and washed for re-use. In a modified construction of apparatus, a reflux condenser is provided to return unchanged chlorides to the vessel 1, while the olefines only pass off to condenser 15.
