Abstract
1,192,422. Bearings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 12 May, 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 22073/67. Heading F2A. A fluid cylindrical or thrust bearing has a number of substantially radial passages formed in the rotating member thereof so that, when the member is rotated and fluid is supplied to the passages, the fluid is pressurized by means of centrifugal force. In an embodiment, a rotatable shaft 10, Fig. 1, having an integral flange 11 is provided with passages 14A and 14, each of the latter terminating in a flow-restricting nozzle 15 which exhausts into a recess 16. In use, water is supplied from a pipe 18 to an annular trough 17 which connects to the passages 14A and the water is forced, by the rotation of the shaft, between a bearing surface 12 of the flange 11 and a bearing surface 13 of the non-rotating member of the bearing. In modifications, the shaft is provided with an axial passage 22, Fig. 2, which supplies water to a pair of inwardly-inclined nozzles 21, via a pair of radial passages 20; each radial passage 20 leads to a pair of inclined branch passages 21, Fig. 3 (not shown), each having a nozzle thereon; and a combined fluid cylindrical and thrust bearing for a shaft 40, Fig. 4, having an integral flange 44, comprises a fluid cylindrical portion formed by means of a housing 41, a clearance being provided between the shaft 40 and the housing 41, said clearance also serving to supply nozzles 46 of a fluid thrust portion formed by means of a flange of the housing 41 and the flange 44 of the shaft 40, the nozzles 46 being connected to the supply source of fluid via axial ducts 43, radial ducts 43A and branches 46.
