Abstract

1,192,249. Fluid pressure device for moving loads. HYDRAULIC DRILLING EQUIPMENT Ltd. 19 Aug., 1968 [13 Oct., 1967], No. 46750/67. Heading B8H. [Also in Division F2] A device for applying a force to move a load applied to a cross-head 5 comprises two doubleacting cylinders 1 mounted on a frame and supplied with pressure fluid through ducts 10. Each cylinder 1 houses a floating piston 2 both ends of which are connected with a rectangular section steel tape 3, in one or two pieces, forming a closed loop by passing over sheaves 4 and being connected to the cross-head 5. The tape 3 has a plastics coating where it can pass through seals 8. Each seal 8 has a body 16 which caps the cylinder 1 and contains eight sealing pads 17, 18 of synthetic elastomer mounted in carriers 19 of nylon or polytetrafluoroethylene. The carriers 19 are biased inwardly by pistons 20 carried in transverse bores and are subjected to the pressure in the adjacent part of the cylinder 1 through ducts 21. The pistons 20 acting against the pads 18 (which lie against the longer side of the tape 3) are biased by springs 22. The carriers 19 and the sealing pads 17, 18 are also biased by other springs, Fig. 3 (not shown).
