Abstract
1,191,631. Separating mixtures of phenolic isomers. STRUTHERS SCIENTIFIC & INTERNATIONAL CORP. 23 May, 1967 [24 May, 1966], No. 23043/66. Heading C2C. In separating m-cresol from cresol mixtures, by forming an adduct with urea and then decomposing the adduct into its components at a higher temperature, the process is accelerated by adding a small proportion of an activation agent to the mixture. The specified activation agents are nitrites, chromates, bromates, iodates, molybdates, phosphates or ammonium salts, to which sodium chloride may be added. The ureaphenol adduct is separated by crystallization, suitably at 50-55‹ F., and is later decomposed by heating, suitably at 110‹ F., or above. A suitable laboratory apparatus and a full-scale plant are described, and in the latter the separation of the adduct from the mixture is effected in stages.
