[Also in Divisions C1 and C2] A catalyst composition for use in the preparation of #-caprolactam comprises copper chromite and, optionally, an additional metal selected from Ag, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Al, Ga, Ti, Sn, Pb, Sb, Bi, V, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd and Pt, the atomic ratio of . Cr to Cu preferably being between 0.01 to 1 and 5 to I and, when additional metal is present, the atomic ratio of additional metal to Cu preferably being between 0.001 to 1 and I to 1. The catalyst composition may be supported on a carrier of, for example, alumina, silica gel, kieselguhr or pumice. Specified catalyst compositions are: copper-chromium-barium oxide wherein the atomic ratio Cu:Cr:Ba is 1:1:0:1 (Examples 7, 8); copper-chromium-zinc oxide wherein the atomic ratio Cu:Cr:Zn is 1:0.8:0.05 (Example 10); copper-chromiummanganese oxide wherein the atomic ratio Cu:Cr:Mn is either 1:1:0.1 (Example 9) or 1:1:0.03 (Example 11); and copper-chromiumadditional metal oxide wherein the additional metal is selected from Ag, Mg, Ba, Zn, Cd, Al, Sn, Sb, Bi, V, Mo, W, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Rh, Pd and Pt and wherein the atomic ratio Cu:Cr:additional metal is 1:1:0.02 (Example 12).
