Abstract

1,191,402. Gear grinding. LEAR SIEGLER Inc. 13 March, 1968 [18 April, 1967], No. 12216/68. Heading B3D. A gear grinding machine has a rotatable work spindle 18 arranged in a fixed position on a base 10, a grinding wheel W reciprocable relative to the workpiece G in a direction parallel to the spindle and mounted so as to be angularly adjustable about an axis perpendicular to that of the spindle, mechanism including an adjustable sine bar and follower for causing timed angular movement of the work spindle in response to said reciprocal movement and a crowning slide associated with the grinding wheel support and movable transversely to the direction of reciprocation to effect crowning of the gear G. Fluid pressure cylinder unit 32, 34 reciprocates a slide 36 parallel to the work spindle 18 and the grinding wheel column 20 is adjustably coupled to the slide 36 for movement therewith by adjustable rods 46, 50, 38 and fluid pressure operated latching means 40, 44. Wheel W is angularly and vertically adjustable on the column 20. Rotary movement of the spindle 18 is derived from transverse movement of a rack 74 (Fig. 2) which is in mesh with a gear 75 on the spindle 18 and which is mounted in a slide member 76. Angularly adjustable sine bar 94 together with follower 98 and drive pin 100 causes transverse movement of the slide 76 and rack 74 when the slide 36 is reciprocated by fluid pressure unit 32. This causes rotary movement of the gear as desired for providing helical teeth. In order to index the gear G by one tooth space (one side of a tooth only being machined at a time) a fluid pressure unit 88 is operable to shift the rack 74 relative to the slide 76 by means of inclined cam slot 84, follower 82 and drive pin 80. Adjustable abutment means 90 limit the extent of this indexing movement. Crowning is effected by the action of an adjustable sine bar 126 through follower 122 and arm 120 on a crowning cam 110; the cam 110 bears on followers 112, 114 attached to a transverse crowning slide 108 mounted on slide 36, and causes transverse movement bodily of the sine bar 94 mounted thereon with consequential modification of the rotary motion of the gear G. The grinding wheel support column 20 is movable to an end position where a vertically movable wheel trimmer 66, 68 can be brought into operation.
