[Also in Division B4] A process for increasing the porosity of uppers made from tanned animal hides for the manufacture of footwear, comprises perforating the upper, without removing material, by rupturing or tearing the individual fibres thereby forming a plurality of apertures which are distributed over the surface of the upper. The perforation is effected by means of a comb having steel needles which may be distributed over the comb in a uniform or varying density. The needles are preferably pressed into the upper on the hairside of the leather in order to make the apertures less visible.
