In a fabric laying machine, fabric is supplied to engagement means 3a movable along a path whilst carrying a part of the fabric and operating means 16 movable along a path parallel to the path of the means 3a and ar- Tanged to operate the means 3a to release the fabric therefrom and deposit it smoothly to form a lay 14. As shown, the fabric passes from a stack 17, Fig. 2, around scroll rollers 9 to remove folds or crinkles, between selvedge uncurlers 8 and past a feeler mechanism 7 which controls the widthwise position of two chains 3. Fig. 1, having clips 3a or pins secured thereto to grip the fabric edges. The chains 3 are carried by guides 2, Fig. 1, and are driven by an electric Selsyn control motor 13, Fig. 2. Geared nip rollers 5 are mounted on a carrier 15 which runs along a track 4, Fig. 1, on each guide 2 and which has a bar 16 arranged to open the clips 3a to allow the fabric to pass between the rollers 5 and be deposited on the lay 14 whilst the carrier 15 moves from B to A. Whilst the carrier 15 is running from A to B it moves with a speed equal to half that of the chains 3 and when it reaches the position B the chains are stopped during its return movement and the laying of the fabric. The chain guide assembly is mounted on telescopic supports 1 so that it can be raised as the height of the lay 14 increases. When the lay 14 reaches a predetermined height it. is removed by a conveyor 10, Fig. 2, to a cutting table. A steaming arrangement (not shown) may be arranged in the entry field 6 for the chains 3. Each clip 3a, Fig. 3, comprises a support 20 bolted to the chain and which has a member 21 pivotally connected thereto. A limb 22 on the member 21 urged by gravity or a spring engages the fabric against a base 24. The bar 16 contacts a limb 23 on the member 21 to pivot it anticlockwise to release the fabric.
