Abstract

1,191,011. Coating. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 23 March, 1967 [1 July, 19661, No. 13715/ 67. Heading B2K. [Also in Division B5] An object is coated by applying a liquid layer of a coating material which is capable of polymerisation by exposure to radiation, to the surface of a flexible pellicle, applying the coated surface to the surface of the object, and irradiating the combination of the object, the coating material and the pellicle by exposure to radiation of sufficient intensity to polymerise the coating material. Examples of suitable liquids are solutions of unsaturated polyesters in vinyl monomers e.g. polyesters formed from polyhydric alcohols such as ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol and unsaturated acids such as maleic, fumaric acids. Polybutadiene, polyisoprene can be used instead of the polyester. The vinyl monomer may be styrene, divinyl benzene. The coating may be irradiated using energised electrons having an average potential of 150,000 volts to 450,000 volts. The distance between the electron source and the coating may vary between 2 to 18 inches so as to achieve the minimum variation in polymerisation rates with depth. Objects mentioned are formed of heat sensitive materials e.g. plastics, rubber, glass. The pellicle may be metal or an inert organic substance so that the pellicle may be readily stripped away. The coated object can be left with the protective pellicle in place. The surface of the pellicle may be textured and such texture is then mirrored in the finished coating when the pellicle is stripped away. The pellicle may be given a prior coating which will be transferred to the finished coating e.g. if waxed paper is employed at least a portion of the wax may be transferred to the cured coating. The pellicle may be perforated to provide contrasting areas on the coated object. A portion of the coating material may be carried upon the protective pellicle and a portion applied to the surface to be coated before contacting the coated pellicle to such surface. Suitable materials for the pellicles are polyethylene terephthalate, aluminium, foil, waxed paper and glassine paper.
