Abstract
1,190,878. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. 13 Sept., 1968 [9 Oct., 1967], No. 43789/68. Heading H2E. In an electrical connector assembly, contacts 24 are force-fitted and held in a plurality of through passageways 6 in an insulating block 2 in one orientation only. The contact (Fig. 4) comprises a cylindrical plug portion 26 (or a socket portion, not shown) in axial alignment with a further cylindrical portion 28, a U- shaped force-fit portion 30 of larger transverse dimension, and a post portion 14. The insulating block 2 (Fig. 6) may be of firm plastics material, and includes through passageways 6, each of which comprises an entrance section 52 of rectangular cross-section, designed to receive the U-shaped section as a force-fit, a smaller intermediate cylindrical section, offset with respect to the entrance section so that the bases of the two sections are at the same level, and a forward cylindrical section 46. The dimensions of the force-fit portion are such that insertion is possible in one position only, and since there is a force-fit, this predetermined orientation is maintained. In a modification (Figs. 8 and 10), the force-fit portion 58 may be cylindrical, with a deformable open seam; the corresponding passageway entrance section 52<1> will also be cylindrical. An ear 54 may be provided to engage a recess 56 in the block to prevent rotation if the force-fit is insufficiently tight. The contacts include a resilient detent 44 which engages a shoulder 50 to prevent withdrawal, and may be stamped out from sheet metal stock, preferably of two thicknesses so that the post portion is stronger than the bent portions. Connections to the post 14 may be by clips (18) (Fig. 3, not shown), or by wrapping. In use, the assembly is designed to facilitate automatic wiring, and may be precisely located on a wiring fixture (22) by dowel-pins (32) in slots (12) and (13) in the block 2 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3, not shown).
