Abstract

1,190,547. Circulators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 5 March, 1969, No. 11783/69. Heading H1W. A waveguide junction circulator comprises a central resonant cavity loaded with ferrimagnetic material and waveguide ports having a cut-off frequency above the resonant frequency of the cavity. The three ports 4 of the circulator shown each consist of a length of rectangular waveguide having transverse dimensions such that it is beyond cut-off at the operative frequency. Under these circumstances each section l of waveguide behaves as an inductive reactance and the addition of capacitative tuning screws 6, 7 imparts band-pass properties to the sections. The screws may be replaced by irises, and the waveguides may be circular. The narrow sides of the rectangular waveguides may be loaded with ferrite or garnet 8 and subject to a transverse magnetic field whereby the cut-off frequency of the waveguides may be varied. It is also possible to vary the resonant frequency of the central cavity by means of the bias field H DC .
