Abstract
1,190,094. Printing apparatus; transfer cylinder. MILLER PRINTING MACHINERY CO. 19 July, 1967 [16 Jan., 1967], No. 33091/67. Heading B6C. A transfer cylinder for a printing press comprises a pair of sheet-engaging means so arranged that a sheet may be transferred from one to the other wherein one of the sheet-engaging means is mounted on a tumbler shaft and is biased towards an outer or untumbled position and drive means connected via an actuator shaft to the tumbler shaft are operable to cause the sheet-engaging means to tumble or swing inwards, the torque to the tumbler shaft being imparted at a point intermediate the ends of the shaft. The transfer cylinder is especially applicable as the third transfer cylinder of a multi-colour and perfecting press as disclosed in U.K. Specification No. 735,477 in which the pair of sheet-engaging means are both gripper assemblies, one assembly being optionally used to engage the trailing edge of a sheet and reverse it for perfecting by transferring it to the second gripper assembly; when the press is being used for multi-colour printing, the first assembly is inactive (Fig. 1, not shown). Figure 4 illustrates the drive mechanisms for the tumbling of gripper assemblies 22, 24 carried on tumbler shafts 110; each drive shaft 64 is rotated by a cam roller (60), (Fig. 2, not shown), riding on a cam surface (62) at the end of the cylinder, and is connected to an actuator shaft 86, Fig. 6, by linkage 90. Shaft 86 carries at a point intermediate the ends of the cylinder, a gear segment 178 meshing with gear teeth 176 on a pinion 174 which rotates with shaft 110. Thus, rotation of drive shaft 64 in one direction tumbles the respective gripper assembly against the resilient bias of springs (158), (Fig. 5, not shown). The cam mechanisms (60, 62), are rendered inoperative when the press is not perfecting so that both assemblies remain in their untumbled position. The gripper assemblies are conventional cam-operated mechanisms.
